Registration

Welcome!

We are pleased to have you join the Winooski School District.  We value all of our students and families so please feel free to reach out to us at any time for assistance.

If you are registering a new student within the Winooski School District, you will first need to complete our New Student Pre-Registration form. This pre-registration form is used for students of all ages, from preschool through grade 12. If you are registering a student for preschool, they must be 3 years old on or before September 1st (unless they have an IEP). For kindergarten registration, they must be 5 years old on or before September 1st.

Please understand that to enroll in our district, you must live in Winooski. However, there may be exceptions, which are detailed at the bottom of the page.

Please note that submitting this form is just the first step of the registration process.

You should receive follow-up emails with the next steps.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I, the parent or guardian, need to do?

For step by step instructions on how to complete a student registration, or add a new student to an existing account, please see our guide: How to Complete New Student Registration Forms.

It is recommended that you complete registration using a computer. However, PowerSchool has a mobile app, available on both Android and iOS, that can be used as well. If you lack access to either a computer or mobile phone, please call our District Registrar at 802-383-6106 to set up a registration appointment.

After submitting a New Student Pre-Registration form, the registrar will review and approve your pre-registration. After it has been approved, you will receive three emails notifying you of its approval and providing you with an access ID and password. This access ID and password are used to create your parent access account for our PowerSchool system. Parents and guardians who already have a Winooski PowerSchool account will instead use this new access ID and password to add the new student to their existing account. Once your account is set up you will find the rest of the forms you need to complete in order to finish the registration process.

What do I need to complete registration?

As you prepare to fill out the registration forms, please be aware that we will require the following documents. I’ve finished the registration forms, what are the next steps?

After the registrar has confirmed the completion of the registration forms, they will request the students’ records from their previous school (if applicable) and contact the school counselors to determine their schedule and start date, and plan for a successful integration into the classroom. Please understand that while we appreciate the need to get students into class as soon as possible, this process takes time to complete, and may delay the student’s start date.

High school students and their parents or guardians will be invited to an official enrollment meeting with a counselor after their records have been received and reviewed, to discuss the new student’s schedule and address any additional needs or concerns.

I don’t live in Winooski, but would still like to enroll!

Typically, families are required to live in Winooski to enroll in our district. However, there are two exceptions. Families that are experiencing homelessness may qualify to enroll under the McKinney-Vento Act, and 8th to 12th graders living in another district may enroll through school choice. Both processes are detailed to the right.

Homelessness

Homelessness

The McKinney-Vento Act guarantees educational rights and supports for students experiencing homelessness, including specific supports for unaccompanied youth.

McKinney-Vento Definition of Homeless

The term “homeless children and youth” means individuals who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence, and includes children and youths who:

  • Share the housing of other persons due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason.
  • Live in motels, hotels, trailer parks, or camping grounds due to the lack of alternative adequate accommodations.
  • Live in emergency or transitional shelters.
  • Are abandoned in hospitals.
  • Have a primary nighttime residence that is a public or private place not normally used as a regular sleeping accommodation for human beings.
  • Living in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, bus or train stations, or similar settings.
  • Are migratory and qualify as homeless because they are living in circumstances described in the above situations.

Rights of Eligible Children and Youth

The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act guarantees educational rights and supports for students experiencing homelessness. In general, McKinney-Vento eligible students have a right to:

  • Equal access to the same free, appropriate public education, including public preschool education, as is provided to other children and youth.
  • Immediate enrollment, even when records normally required for enrollment are not present.
  • Remain in the school of origin, if it is in the student’s best interest, in order to maintain educational stability.
  • Access all educational and related services for which they are eligible], including Title I services and free school meals.
  • Full participation in school, which may include participation in extracurricular activities.
  • Transportation, provided by the LEA, to and from the school of origin.

If you believe you qualify under the McKinney-Vento Act, continue with pre-registration as usual and call our District Registrar at 802-383-6106 to discuss your eligibility.

School Choice

School Choice

High school students (and current 8th graders) in Vermont may apply to attend any public high school in the state of Vermont through school choice. The school choice application process is only open between January 1st and March 1st of each year, and applications are only considered for the next school year.

The Vermont Agency of Education has provided guidelines for determining how many students must be allowed to transfer out, and may be allowed to transfer into each individual school. Students are chosen by lottery from all the applicants for each school district based on the number of open slots. Transportation for school choice students is the responsibility of the students’ families.

If you would like to enroll at Winooski through school choice, speak to your current school district’s registrar for more information. You may view more school choice information at the Vermont Agency of Education website.
